Babu Jagjivan Ram remembered
Rich tributes were paid to the former Deputy Prime Minister on the occasion. The district has witnessed a host of programmes in commemoration of the Dalit leader who worked as a cabinet minister for 35 years and held several key portfolios bringing about path-breaking reforms.
Khammam: The 109th birth anniversary, also known as ‘Samatha Divas’, of former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram was celebrated across the district on Tuesday.
Rich tributes were paid to the former Deputy Prime Minister on the occasion. The district has witnessed a host of programmes in commemoration of the Dalit leader who worked as a cabinet minister for 35 years and held several key portfolios bringing about path-breaking reforms.
Speaking in an official programme, Joint Collector D Divya at Bhakta Ramadasu Kalakshetram, she said that though Babu Jagjivan Ram hailed from a backward community and faced discrimination, his hard work and determination took him to places.
“Babu Jagjivan Ram’s contribution for the uplift of the oppressed classes in the country is remembered forever,” Divya said, appealing to youth to idolise him.
It may be mentioned here that the leader as Food and Agriculture Minister successfully led the Green Revolution. As Defence Minister, he led India to victory in 1971 war against Pakistan which saw the birth of Bangladesh. As a Labour Minister, he was instrumental in bringing several labour welfare policies.
Khammam Mayor Dr G Papalal said: “Babu Jagjivan Ram’s life is an inspiration.” He stressed the need for emulating Babu Jagjivan Ram's principles.
Additional Joint Collector K Babu Rao, Babu Jagjivan Ram Utsava Committee convener Mudusu Jacob Prathap, co-conevenr Macharla Yesobu were among others who recalled the services of the Dalit leader.
Later, Divya and Dr Papalal distributed monetary benefit papers under Kalyana Lakshmi and auto-rickshaws to Scheduled Caste beneficiaries.
