Hyderabad: Half of the liver disease-related deaths in the country can be prevented by vaccination and some just by leading a healthy lifestyle. It is estimated that about two lakh people are diagnosed with end stage liver disease each year and about 0.02 per cent population (25,000) need liver transplants every year.

India is home to 11 per cent of the world’s patients affected with chronic Hepatitis B and the number of deaths from liver cancer or cirrhosis each year range between 1-2 lakh.

Dr Dharmesh Kapoor, senior consultant hepatologist, Global Hospitals, said, “The vaccine is cheap but we do not have a universal immunisation programme. The most common disease we see is fatty liver disease.”

“Fatty liver disease is now emerging as the most common cause of chronic liver disease across the world. So this is something that is clear danger for everyone. Fatty liver disease is a preventable disease and in the initial stages it just needs a lifestyle modification,” he said.

Dr Dharmesh said that alcohol related liver disease was another kind of liver disease that could easily be prevented. “Even this is a very common problem in our country,” he added.

Addressing a press conference, Dr K Ravindranath, Chairman and Managing Director, Global Hospitals Group said, “The Global Institute of Liver and Pancreatic Diseases at Aware Global Hospitals in L B Nagar would cater to the disease.

We have the largest team of specialists, comprising of hepatologists, liver transplant surgeons, critical care specialists and anaesthetists, who are supported by world class infrastructure and technology and a strong commitment to deliver exceptional patient care.”

“We will also have a dedicated liver ICU as liver problems require a different intensive care set-up. The doctors will also visit neighbouring districts and campaign to raise awareness about liver diseases,” Dr Kapoor added.
