Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to relocate the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr BR Ambedkar and late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, which are yet to be unveiled on the GHMC premises.

The statue of YSR was installed in the year 2010 after a standing committee gave its approval when Banda Karthika Reddy was the Mayor. Later following protests by TDP corporators statues of Mahatma Gandhi and B R Ambedkar were also close to the statue of YSR. But, the statues have not yet been unveiled due to one or other controversy.

Speaking to The Hans India GHMC Mayor B Rammohan said that the civic body had decided to either relocate or reduce the size of the basement to facilitate trouble-free passage of vehicles and their parking. He said that the statues would be relocated on the GHMC premises itself.

Meanwhile, the civic body had spent Rs 12.5 lakh for the statue and various civil works, including platform, fountain, and electrical works. The civic body officials claimed that the Corporation had been annually spending about Rs 1 lakh for maintenance
of the statues.
