Hyderabad: Around 300 advocates from Telangana were detained by the police for violating prohibitory orders against the ‘Chalo High Court’ rally here on Monday. These advocates threatened to stay away from duties and go for an indefinite strike if the High Court failed to issue orders in favour of the demands put forth by Telangana advocates by July 1.

The advocates practising in various courts across the State and representing Telangana Advocates Joint Action Committee and Federation of Bar Association gathered in huge numbers and took out a rally in protest against the delay in bifurcation of the High Court for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The advocates demanded appointment of Telangana judges in the State and remove all judges from Andhra Pradesh. The police detained about 300 of them and shifted them to various police stations as they wanted to take out a rally.

Meanwhile, 15 advocates staged a protest in front of the Chief Justice’s chamber demanding immediate decision. However, the police foiled the advocates’ attempt. The Chief Justice pacified these advocates and reportedly told them that providing the option of choosing the State for advocates and judges would take another three months and asked the protestors to call off their dharna.

However, the Chief Justice asked the police to release all advocates and allow them to take out a rally till Madina from the High Court premises. Later, the advocates organised a press meet and threatened to go on indefinite strike from July 1, if they did not get favourable orders in support of their demands.

Meanwhile, a procession of Telangana lawyers started from the Nampally Criminal Courts Complex was obstructed by the police. The Bar Association of Telangana High Court immediately lodged a complaint with the acting Chief Justice against the police action. On the other hand, the agitating advocates staged a rasta roko on the High Court premises.

Speaking on the occasion, an advocate, Ranga Rao, said they did not know whom to approach when injustice was being done to the judiciary. He also alleged that advocates and judges belonging to AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s community were being posted in the High Court even after the bifurcation of the united State.

If the situation remained unchanged, the Telangana advocates union would be forced to lock the court halls being presided over by Andhra judges, he warned. The lawyers in Nizamabad and Warangal locked the district courts in support of their demand. Meanwhile, the judicial employees have decided to intensify the protest by going on strike from July 1. They served a strike notice on the Hyderabad High Court Registrar.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy said no permission was given for ‘Chalo High Court’. The police banned processions around the High Court to foil any protest. The association said about 130 officers of Andhra nativity were allotted to Telangana after they exercised the option.
