Hyderabad: Telangana Congress affairs in-charge and AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Wednesday lambasted defectors who joined TRS on Wednesday.

  • AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh stresses the need for fixing time frame for the Assembly Speaker to take action against defectors
  • He lays blame at the doorstep of TRS for encouraging defections

Digvijay Singh said his party would soon knock on the doors of High Court and Election Commission, seeking amendment to the Anti-Defection Law. He stressed the need for fixing a time -frame for taking action against defectors by the Assembly Speaker.

Addressing media persons at Gandhi Bhavan after attending the TPCC coordination committee meeting, the AICC General Secretary accused Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao of encouraging defections from Congress by luring them with “huge contracts.”

Responding to a question, he stopped short of blaming the State party leadership and put the onus on KCR. He said the blame should be laid at the doorstep of the ruling party which had resorted to “trading” MLAs and MLCs. “Those who have left believe in politics of business. But, the party workers and leaders believing in the ideology of Congress will never leave,” he said.

Critical of the idea of distributing clothes to Muslims on the eve of Ramzan, he said poor families from the Minority community should be provided with a regular source of income through jobs, which was promised by the government during its election campaign. “Distribution of clothes to 2 lakh people will be of no help to them, but creation of employment definitely does. What happened to the promise of 12 per cent reservation,” he asked.

While announcing the party’s support to the Mallanna Sagar agitators, Digvijay Singh said the government’s decision to implement G O 123 was nothing but forcing farmers to sell their lands ignoring the obligation of resettlement and rehabilitation and the government was acting like ‘middlemen’.

Similar to the NDA government, the State government had tried to dilute the “Resettlement and Rehabilitation Act.” He raised questions about the project costs which had increased manifold. “We are certain that the government has made lot of padding to increase the budget cost of projects,” he added.

The AICC general secretary proclaimed that the party would not keep quiet and would be launching agitations, public meetings and rallies in all the districts. “The next coordination meeting to be held on July 19 would be organised in a rural area,” he added.

TPCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy demanded that the State government constitute a judicial commission to recommend reorganisation of districts. He said the TPCC would be forming committees at the district, mandal and booth levels by July-end.
