Hyderabad: Telangana State government is zeroing in on construction of about seven to nine skyscrapers in place of the existing buildings at the State Secretariat complex. The foundation laying function laying function for the new buildings is likely to be held by Dasara or towards the end of the year, according to top source.

Under this proposal, the government is likely to go in for skyscrapers which have10 to 15 storeys after demolishing all the existing structures, including the blocks allotted to AP government. The source told The Hans India that the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao wanted the total number of blocks to be in odd numbers.

  • The government is planning to build high-rise buildings, each consisting between 10 and 15 storeys in the place of existing structures
  • Foundation laying function is likely to be held by Dasara or towards the end of the year

The implementing agency – Roads and Buildings ( R and B) Department decided to construct either 7 or nine 9 blocks under the new plan, a senior said on Saturday. The official said the objective behind the construction of high- rise buildings was to increase the office space from the present 9.50 lakh square feet to nearly 12 lakh square feet to ensure that space is provided to all departments.

The government wanted to bring all government offices, ranging from Ministers to Secretaries and Head of the Department (HoDs) under a single roof in the new secretariat. “We want to create a functional Secretariat which should be convenient place for both officials and people,” officials said.

In each building, three to four floors would be dedicated for vehicle parking. Another two floors would be utilised as conference halls and the remaining floors would be allotted for offices. Finalisation of the designs are under progress as the government roped in some international construction and architecture agencies to build a best Secretariat in the country.

The construction of all blocks would be taken up simultaneously to ensure that the new Secretariat comes into operation in a year after laying the foundation stone. Setting up of solar power panels and green buildings would also be part of the new structures.

As the government has already denotified the oldest structure in the Secretariat- G block from the heritage list, there would be no objection from the heritage organisations in demolishing the building which was under dilapidated state, the official said. The total cost of the project is estimated to be between Rs 250 crore and Rs 300 crore.
