Khammam: CPI (M-L) New Democracy district committee secretary Potu Ranga Rao demanded creation of Adivasi district with Bhadrachalam as its headquarters.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the members of district committee urged the government to carve out Adivasi district keeping in view of the majority of tribal communities living in the region.

“Creation of Adivasi district would be immensely helpful to the tribals, who were leading a miserable life due to lackadaisical approach of the government. Though the 1/70 Act is in force in as many as 22 mandals of the district, the development of the tribals is far cry,” Rao said.

It may be mentioned here that under the provisions of 1/70 Act, land in the scheduled areas cannot be alienated to a non-tribal. But the Act has been violated for a long time.
He said that though there is an Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), the funds meant for the development of Adivasis are meagre.

Hence, there is a need for an Adivasi district consisting of Bhadrachalam, Kothagudem, Pinapaka, Yellandu and Aswaraopet Assembly constituencies.

Further the committee demanded the government announcement of Yellandu, Sathupalli and Madhira as revenue divisions. Talking on podu land issue, the committee said that they will organise ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ a protest demonstration on July 1, demanding the government stop police and forest officials’ attacks on podu cultivators.

The rally, which starts at Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram would culminate at Indira Park.
The leaders criticised the government for protecting the interests of the corporates while ignoring the rights of the tribals bestowed under The Scheduled Tribes & Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act 2005.

AIKMS state general secretary Kechela Rangaiah, former MLA Gummadi Narsaiah, senior leaders Rayala Chandrasekhar, G Venkateswar Rao and Avula Venkateswarlu were among others present at the press meet.
