Hyderabad: A two judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice P Naveen Rao was informed by the Telangana State government that it had declared drought hit areas in the State after following the guidelines prepared by the State and Central governments.

B R Meena, Principal Secretary Revenue and Disaster Management Department, submitted an affidavit in this regard following a direction from the bench in a plea by Congress MLA T Jeevan Reddy. He submitted to the court that there was inaction on part of the authorities and they had failed to include 21 mandals out of 40 mandals in Karimnagar district in the drought-affected list in spite of the recommendation by the district Collector.

He informed the court that in the there was deficit rainfall. It was less than State average of 713. 6 mm and in this backdrop, the State government had appointed a State-level committee to recommend which mandals should be declared drought-affected mandals. He pointed out that declaring of Kesavapatnam mandal alone as drought-hit would not serve any purpose.
