Mahbubnagar: With the state government setting the target of providing irrigation water to more than 4 lakh acres in Mahabubnagar under the existing projects by the end of this July, the officials concerned of Land Acquisition Department and engineers responsible for completing these works are racing against time to meet the deadlines.
Out of an estimated requirement of 96485.07 acres of land, details of about 90744.79 acres have been obtained by the Land Acquisition Officers (LAO) under all the four lift irrigation projects of Bheema (I & II), Kalwakurthy (a & b), Nettempad (a & b) and Koilsagar projects in the district. So far the district administration has succeeded in acquiring 86,877.99 acres and about 3,866.80 acres of land is yet to be acquired.
“We have almost completed 96 per cent of land acquisition under all the existing projects and we are doing our best to complete the remaining in the next one month,” informed Ms Vanaja, Special Collector for Land Acquisitions.
Although the state government has set the targets to complete the land acquisitions and construction works pertaining to all the four major lift irrigation projects to supply water to 4 lakh acres, given the pace of works this gigantic target is highly difficult to be achieved in the said time.
“We understand that this is a huge task, but our efforts are on to meet the target. Despite having scarcity, with adequate human resources at our disposal we are doing our best to complete at least 75 per cent of the said target. Out of 3,866 acres of land, we will definitely acquire 2,500 acres and see that the farmers of the last ayacut get irrigation water,” the Special Collector expressed her hope.
According to irrigation officials, major canal works under all the existing projects have almost come to an end, however, the works on sub-canals, distributaries and sub-distributaries is pending at various places. “Land acquisition is a continuous process. When we are designing a gigantic project like Mahatma Gandhi lift irrigation, Jurala Priyadarshini and Nettampad, the process will continue as more and more farmers will be added as we go on extending water supply to the downstream regions. At this juncture, we will have to reassess the land requirements for small distributaries and this will take more time,” explained Vanaja.
As per the report available from the irrigation department, the officials have completed 98.96 per cent land acquisition under Bheema-1 Lift Irrigation project, about 94 per cent is completed under Bheema-2. Similarly, under Mahatma Gandhi lift irrigation scheme project (KLI) at Nagarkurnool, an area of 11448.29 acres out of 12145.72 acres is already acquired and about 697.43 acres is yet to be acquired.
Under Kalwakurthy against a requirement of 6823.87 acres, the officials could successfully acquire 92.16 per cent of lands and a balance of 535.33 is yet to be acquired.
