Hyderabad: In an innovative move, cash-strapped Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has devised a novel way to increase its revenue by operating its own petrol bunks on its properties across the State. It will run nearly 60 petrol bunks of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) on its properties, it is learnt.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, during his day-long meeting recently, had directed the corporation to find out ways and means to increase revenue apart from improving passenger services. The corporation is already in search of alternative ways to generate revenue. According to official sources, the workers’ unions have always talked of putting properties to good use. The corporation has vast properties in its name and proper use would help generate huge revenue for the corporation.

According to officials, the corporation has shown interest in owning petrol pumps at various places in the State. This would ensure that the corporation gets additional revenue other than from regular services. The oil companies too had approached the corporation for providing dealership to the corporation, said the officials.

The TSRTC officials said the HPCL had taken up a survey across the State and identified 50 to 60 ideal places for setting up petrol pumps on the lands belonging to the corporation.

“The HPCL officials have given a report to us and to begin with, we are looking at 10 to 15 petrol pumps at major locations in the State other than the city,” said TSRTC MD G V Ramana Rao. Ramana Rao said land would be in the name of the corporation and the bunk would be outsourced.

It would be around 1,000 sq yards land which is required for setting up of the pump. Land will be ours and people who run (the service will be outsourced) will have to share revenue apart from the value of land,” said Ramana Rao. The corporation has been reeling under accumulated losses of Rs 2,200 crore and during the previous year it had to suffer Rs 701 crore losses. The operational losses during the current year are Rs 257 crore.

Telangana RTC chairman S Satyanarayana recently said the corporation did not want to depend on the government and wanted to improve revenues on its own by trying out different ways. “If we get the desired assistance from the government, the RTC will easily overcome all losses.

We do not want to depend on the government budget. Everyone in the corporation wants the RTC to overcome losses and are also willing to give their best efforts, but there should be discipline in these efforts,” said Satyanarayana, during his recent visit to MGBS.
