Hyderabad: Two young men, who were earlier detained by the police by calling them as sympathisers of the Islamic State, alleged that officers of National Investigation Agency were harassing them and threatening to book false cases if they fail to act as witnesses.
In 2014, the Telangana police detained 14 young men from different places in Telangana when they allegedly attempted to leave the country and join the Islamic State. The police counselled them and set them free, later. Mohammed Adnan Ahmed of Hyderabad and Mohammed Nomaan Jameel of Karimnagar were among those.
On Tuesday, the duo and their families held a press conference at Somajiguda. They told media that the Union government and the State government were trying to foist cases on young Muslim men and denying them their freedom.
Mohammed Adnan Ahmed (24), a software engineer from Chandrayangutta, alleged that on July 1, he received a call from NIA and was asked to visit their office in Begumpet. But, when he visited the NIA office, the officials allegedly forced Adnan to sign papers and asked him to become a witness in a case and to go to New Delhi to record their statement on July 8.
Adnan said, “On July 1, I was called to the NIA office in Begumpet. They took my signatures on some papers and asked me to become a witness in the recent case of arrests made by the NIA in Hyderabad. They threatened to arrest me if I do not go to Delhi and record my statement. I do not know why the officers are trying to involve me.”
When asked, Adnan said that he had planned to go to Turkey in 2014 and booked tickets and obtained a visa. But later, he cancelled it through the travel agent. Later, he was picked up by the police and counselled for having sympathetic ideology towards ISIS, which he claimed was not true.
Mohammed Nomaan Jameel (23), a civil engineering graduate from Karimnagar, was detained by the TS police accusing him of being an IS sympathizer. “I was searching about Iraq and Syria and some other countries due to anxiety of knowing what was happening there, but the police picked me up and alleged that I was an IS sympathizer and counselled me not to browse such websites and watch videos,” said Nomaan.
Nomaan alleged that he received a call from NIA about a month ago and during the conversation, some officers asked him to become a witness in a case and threatened to book him in a false case, if he failed to go to Delhi and do as directed. “I received a call last month before the recent arrests in the city.
On July 3, they called me to the NIA office and took some signatures on some papers. When I tried to read what was written on them, the officers snatched away the papers and said they would send flight tickets for New Delhi and told me that I had to come on July 8,” said Nomaan.
Parents and relatives of the young men said if browsing websites and watching videos on internet is an offense, why does the government allow such websites to be active and why don’t they deactivate or ban them. They requested the State and Union governments not to harass their children and allow them to live peacefully.
