Hyderabad: The State government is mulling a proposal according to which planting a minimum number of saplings would be mandatory to obtain building permissions in municipalities besides water harvesting structures.

Speaking to the media after planting saplings at the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate as part of Telanganaku Haritha Haram Phase II on Friday, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao said that the State was a victim of global warming and necessary steps have to be taken immediately to protect the environment.

“It is a fact that we are directly affected by global warming. Fluctuating temperatures and irregular rainfall are damaging the economy. The plantation drive will benefit the coming generations. Changes in the seasons, untimely rains and other adverse environmental changes can be controlled only with plantation and by maintaining adequate trees. I request everyone to plant trees and save life on the earth,” said KTR.

He said the State government’s initiative of planting a record number of 230 crore saplings in five years is the third-largest global experiment ever done. This initiative would help in increasing the State’s green cover from 24 per cent to 33 per cent, thereby decreasing the temperatures to much lower levels, he said.

“Experts have suggested that permissions for new constructions be granted only after the applicants plant saplings on their respective premises. We are thinking of implementing this proposal soon in all municipalities across the State, including Hyderabad,” added the Minister.

As part of Haritha Haram, the police department also planted thousands of saplings in police stations across the state. Additional Director General (Law & Order) Anjani Kumar said that as many as 10 lakh saplings would be planted in police stations across the State in the next three years.

Anjani Kumar along with senior IPS officers Satyanaraian, Gopi Krishna, Sandeep Shandilya, Sanjay Kumar Jain, Bala Naga Devi and Kalpana Naik planted saplings on the premises of the DGP’s office.
