Hyderabad: The doctors at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital (SDEH) have performed cornea transplantation on Nookalatalli, 60, on Friday. She was one of the five patients who was in the danger of losing eyesight. Dr Rajendra Gupta, Deputy Superintendent, SDEH said, “We would be conducting another cornea transplant on Saturday subject to availability of tissue.”

Doctors say that they would only be able to tell how the patient is responding to the therapeutic graft only after the bandage is removed. The cornea transplant was done on Friday thanks to the donation from a brain dead patient from Vasan Eye Hospital. Meanwhile, the other two patients are responding well to the treatment and their cornea is improving. In the case of the remaining one patient, cornea operation would be the only available choice if there was no improvement.

The five patients who are in danger of losing eyesight in one of the eye are Anji Reddy, 70, Manikyam, 75, Nookalatalli, 60, Prabavathi, 58 and Arapanibai, 65. Relatives of the patients however are still waiting to see how successful the operation on Nookalatalli will turn out. With two patients responding well to the treatment, the SDEH doctors are hoping the same for the other patients too. The Telangana Government Doctors Association demanded scrapping of Telangana Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation.
