Nalgonda: Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday launched the second phase of Haritha Haram programme at Choutuppal in Nalgonda district.

The second phase programme will continue for two weeks. The 163-km highway between Vijayawada and Hyderabad along with other highways will have saplings planted on either side of the road. The Chief Minister planted a sapling at the Market Yard marking the launch of the programme.

Addressing a huge gathering, KCR called upon people to ensure that the saplings planted survive. He said as man has been destroying ecology and as the green belt was fast vanishing, the monkeys have started coming into the habitats creating severe problems for the people.

On the other hand rains too were playing truant. Hence, it is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure that every plant that is planted survives so that rains would come and monkeys can go back into the forests.

He said he had selected Nalgonda district to launch the second phase of Haritha Haram as it has the least forest cover in the state.

The district stands at last position in the entire nation with only 5.83 percentage of forest coverage against the recommended 33 percentage. He suggested that they should take it as a challenge and plant as many saplings as possible to bring the district to top position in the state by next year.

On the request of Minister Jagadish Reddy, KCR sanctioned an amount of Rs 300 crore for the completion of pending projects in the district such as Pillaipalli, Dharmareddy and Bunadigani canals which provides irrigation water to 25,000 acres of land in Nakerakal and Bhonagiri assembly constituencies.

In view of one lakh massive plantation programme taken up along the NH-65 in the district, police made elaborative arrangements under the supervision of District SP Prakash Reddy to avoid any untoward incidents and traffic problems.

Soon after the Chief Minister planted the first sapling, the Gundrampalli police blew the horns and alerted all the participants to plant saplings in their allotted pits dug in a stretch of 153 km along the National Highway-65 from Dandu Malkapuram of Choutuppal mandal to Telangana border village Nallbandagudem of Kodad mandal in the district.
