Warangal: The stalls at hawker zones constructed by Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) remained unoccupied even after months passed since their construction.

The vendors, now running their trade on push carts or on the footpaths by the side of roads in the city, have been showing disinterest to move to vending zones, despite the best efforts by the corporation officials.

According to the GWMC officials, there are around 2,030 persons involved in petty trade, mostly occupying the footpaths or the roads. By spending around Rs three crores, the GWMC has built hawker (vending) zones at 18 places in tri-cities of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet.

The construction was completed more than five months ago. The traders selling fruits and vegetables are arguing that the stalls built by the corporation at the vending zones are smaller in size and unsuitable for them.

Hence they are denying to get relocated and intend to run their business at their existing places. As a result, the civic body’s exercise of constructing the stalls in the city turned out to be a futile one.

The objective of clearing traders from footpaths and from roads to ease the traffic flow is also getting affected with aversion from traders to run business at vending zones. “The vending zones are scattered here and there they cannot accommodate all the traders at one place.

This could be big problem for us and our business might suffer. The buyers would come to us if we are at one place like a market,” argued a vendor, Md Rabbani.

The same is the opinion of a fruit seller, Ch Raju of Hanamkonda. ‘The stalls are small; we can’t dump our stock in it. Cramming the fruits in a small place could damage them and cause us financial loss,’ he said.

MLA D Vinay Bhasker appealed to the hawkers to extend cooperation to police and the GWMC by shifting their business to the vending zones. They are meant for their benefit, the traders could run their business without any trouble from officials.

Obstructing vehicles on the roads could damage reputation of Warangal, the second biggest city in Telangana, he added while GWMC city planner IK Reddy said the allotment of stalls to the traders is over and soon the traders would be shifted to the hawker zones.
