It even fails to discuss 12% muslim reservation, alleges Congress

Hyderabad: The Congress party on Thursday alleged that the Telangana Legislature Committee on Minorities Welfare skipped several key issues, including 12 per cent Muslim reservation during the Committee’s meeting held here on Wednesday.

In a media statement on Thursday, the party alleged that the meeting failed to discuss several important issues. The Sudhir Commission, which has been assigned the task of studying socio-economic conditions of Muslims in Telangana, has often complained of non-cooperation by various government departments.

“Instead of finding out the truth behind such reports, some members of the Legislature Committee tried to give an impression that everything was fine,” stated Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee (GHCC) Minorities Department Chairman Shaik Abdullah Sohail.

He alleged that the Committee Chairman Aamir Shakil and other members tried to divert people’s attention by trying to cover up the facts about the meeting while briefing media. The Committee has also failed to seek a report from the Advocate General on the status of 4 per cent Muslim reservation case going on in the Supreme Court.

“No representative of the Telangana government was present in the court when the matter came up for hearing on February 29 this year. The Committee should issue necessary directions to the Law, BC Welfare and Minorities Departments to pursue the 4 per cent Muslim reservation case seriously. Best advocates should be hired by the government to defend the ongoing 4 per cent Muslim quota,” he said.

The Congress leader also slammed the Legislature Committee members for not questioning the State government over the delay in constitution of a new Wakf Board, Urdu Academy and other institutions. “The TRS government promised to grant judicial powers to Wakf Board. But it took no steps during the last two years to empower the Wakf Board or restore encroached Wakf land.

Instead of pulling up the government, one member advocated giving away a prime land at Begumpet on lease to Metro Rail Project. Such decisions can be taken only by the Wakf Board and not by a Committee. But a few members are trying to use the Committee as a tool to pursue their commercial interests,” he said.
