Hyderabad: Former Minister and senior Congress leader Marri Sashidhar Reddy demanded that the government suspend the process of land acquisition for the Mallanna Sagar project

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Sashidhar Reddy said the government should take note of the recent suicide of the farmer from Pallepahad village and review the issue.

He held the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and the Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao responsible for the death of the farmer.

He asked the government to ponder over the expert opinion given by the former UN Consultant T Hanumanth Rao who had said that there was no need for reservoirs at the Kaleswaram lift irrigation
project.

He asked the government to act fast to prevent more suicides by farmers. Responding to a question, Sashidhar Reddy said that he had sought half- an-hour meeting with the Governor ESL Narasimhan to explain to him about the impact of the project on the environment and the social costs involved.

He said they would seek the intervention of the Governor in the matter. He further said the design of the project was unscientific and would put an avoidable financial burden on the exchequer.

Sashidhar Reddy who visited the Mahatma Gandhi Lift Irrigation project, on Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal in Garedipalli mandal of Nalgonda district said that the Mallannasagar Lift Irrigation project should be redesigned ‘without any reservoirs’ by taking a cue from the project constructed in 1969.
