Hyderabad: The morning walkers at Jalagam Vengal Rao Park were in for a pleasant surprise on Saturday as over 200 sanitation workers from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) descended on the park and within no time cleaned, repaired and covered the open 15 manholes. In what can be termed as a record, the sprucing up of the park was done within two-hours flat.
The manholes were cleaned and missing manhole covers were replaced with concrete covers. Red gravel was poured on the cemented area to cover the hurried works taken up.
Wondering how the otherwise lackadaisical workers got a spring in their step? Thank the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao. The GHMC got a whiff that KTR was to visit the park and that was enough for the men to get going. All for his majesty!
The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister was receiving a number of complaints from morning walkers which prompted him to make a visit. Though the visit was a short one, it, however, had an impact, said a morning walker gleefully.
B Subba Rao, a 50-year-old said the JVR Park maintenance has been deteriorating. He said that even Irrigation minister T Harish Rao’s visit did not help. “I have been jogging here for the last 10 years, but I have never witnessed such ugly scenes. Even after lodging repeated complaints with the civic body officials did not respond,” he said.
K Venkateshwarlu, a resident of Banjara Hills, said the foul smell emanating from the manholes had made walking un-pleasurable. “The chances of getting ill are more than becoming healthy due to foul smell and mosquitoes”, he said. “I have been worrying why the Corporation officials have been cleaning the before 8am when they usually come after 9.30 pm”, he added.
Reacting on the issue, KTR assured the walkers that the park would be maintained well here after and asked officials to strive hard for developing the parks in the city. He said henceforth the officials would ensure that the park is well-maintained.
He said State government would focus on developing the parks and their beautification. KTR was accompanied by the Khairatabad MLA Chintala Ramchandra Reddy, GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy and others.
