Yellandu (Khammam): The Telangana Joint Action Committee chairman (TJAC) Prof Kodandaram said the State government will not gain anything by continuing its tirade against the tribal communities.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the CPI-ML New Democracy here on Monday, he charged the government of unleashing repressive measures against ‘podu’ farmers in a bid to drive them away from the forests.

“Coercing the Adivasis, who have been cultivating Podu land that was in their possession for many decades, amounts to breach of their rights guaranteed by the Forest Rights Act (FRA),” he said, accusing the government of foisting false cases against the innocent tribals and damaging their crops.

After their long-fought battle against the rulers, the tribals were granted rights over forest land and minor forest produce through 1/70 Act, FRA and PESA, however, they still live in penury without any means of livelihood, Kodandaram said, urging the government not to dislocate the tribals from their natural habitats.

Extending T-JAC’s support for the tribals’ cause, he advised the government to wake up and stop the illegal transportation of iron ore from Bayyaram to elsewhere by unknown persons.

Speaking on the occasion, CPI-ML New Democracy district secretary Potu Ranga Rao said the TRS government is no different to that of previous governments in bulldozing the rights of tribals. He demanded the rulers to withdraw cases against the CPI-ML activists who were supporting the cause of tribals.

He accused Yellandu MLA Koram Kanakaiah of trying to suppress the CPI-ML with the help of police. Former MLA Gummadi Narsaiah and AIKMS state joint secretary Chinna Chandranna were among others present.

Earlier, the cadres of CPI-ML took out a massive rally in the town in protest against the government’s repression against the tribals.
