Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) in coordination with voluntary agencies has embarked on an ambitious plan to set up floating gardens in Hussainsagar.

The Marri Lakshma Reddy Educational Institutions have come forward to help the HMDA set up the floating gardens. Imported plants will be used in the floating gardens to purify the water.

A 20x20-ft floating garden has been set up near the Buddha Purnima project office. The plants will not allow formation of fungus. Fish and plants would take the fungus as food to ensure that water remains pure, said HMDA officials.

M Lakshma Reddy of Marri Lakshma Reddy Educational Institutions told The Hans India that setting up of floating gardens on an experimental basis would rid Hussainsgar of carbon dioxide and fungus. It would help release of oxygen.

After studying the experiment for 10 days, floating gardens would be set up to cover the entire lake. He said following the steps being taken by the State government during the last several months like stopping release of chemicals, the quality of water has improved to some extent with pungent smell disappearing.
