The Railway Sports Complex (RSC) grounds in Secunderabad came alive on Monday when the South Central Railway (SCR) joined the nation in celebrating the 70th Independence Day. Ravindra Gupta, general manager, SCR unfurled the national flag and received the guard of honour.

Contingents representing Railway Protection Force (RPF), Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF), Civil Defence Organisation, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Scouts and Guides and National Green Corps presented the Guard of Honour and the March Past.
Gupta, in his address, highlighted the fact that South Central Railway, which is into its golden jubilee year, remains a proud partner in the mission of Indian Railways to serve the nation as a core transport service provider.
Taking stock of SCR’s performance during the current fiscal, the General Manager stated that SCR has recorded originating gross earnings of Rs 3,868 crore between April-July 2016. The freight loading registered for the four month period was 3.122 crore tonnes while the originating passenger traffic was 12.641 crore.
Elaborating on the focus area for SCR in the current financial year, the General Manager said the Zone has set a target of 193.55 km of new railway line for commissioning during the year, out of which 28 km line has already been completed between Banganapalli-Nandyal.
Gupta also spoke of the seriousness being attached to the issues concerning energy conservation and the steps being taken on this front. “A plan is under implementation to revive old water bodies / wells not in use. As a part of the same, the 150-year-old “Salarjung Open Well”, dating back to the Nizam’s era, is yielding about 3 lakh litres of water every day and expected to generate a substantial saving of around Rs 2 crore per annum,” he said.
On the aspect of passenger amenities, the General Manager stated that Rs 67.24 crore has been spent between April-July 2016 to undertake various works in the Zone. He called upon the entire Railway Work Force to work with a single-minded objective and scale the peak of success.
He commended G V Sanjeeva Rayudu, Inspector, RPF/CIB/Secunderabad who is the sole recipient from Indian Railways to receive the President Police Medal, V Satyanarayana, sub-inspector, RPF, Sirpur Kagaznagar, Secunderabad Division & R Suresh, Sub-Inspector, 7th Battalion RPSF, Moulali for receiving Indian Police Medal award announced by the Government of India.
The parade was followed by eye-catching cultural programmes, presented by students of railway schools and artists of SCR.
