​Hyderabad: The penalty for drink-driving will go up to Rs 10,000 when the Road Transport and Safety Bill is passed, according to East Cyberabad Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat.

Bhagwat on Tuesday while addressing a gathering of motorists at LB Nagar, said the police was roping in professional counsellors to create awareness on the ill-effects of drink-driving.

The official further said since January this year, as many as 5,873 persons were caught and 202 persons were jailed for drink-driving.

“Once the new rules come into existence, the motorists will have to pay Rs 10,000 as penalty and undergo imprisonment for six months, ” he said.
