According to sources, the new policy would permit opening more number of bars in the municipalities. At present, bar permission is sanctioned in urban areas based on the population. Under the existing rules, one bar licence is given for every 13,000 population in areas under Greater Hyderabad limits and in municipalities a bar can be opened for every 30,000 population.

Under the proposed new policy, the Excise and Prohibition department will conduct a survey of the area where applicant wants to set up a bar and will decide on whether there was potential in that area for setting up a bar or not. At present, 800 authorised bars were selling liquor in the State collecting Rs 35 lakh as annual licence fee from each outlet.

The licence fee would also be increased depending on the space used for the establishment of the bars. Sources said the sale of 180 ml and 360 ml liquor bottles would be allowed in these bars under the new policy. At present, bars are permitted to serve liquor to the consumers only through 750 ml bottles.

The officials said to check the supply of adulterated liquor, government has decided to allow bars to sell liquor in standard quantities supplied by Telangana State Beverages Corporation Limited. The officials said the State government this year earned nearly Rs 7,000 crore through bar licences and liquor sales.

Now the government wants to increase revenue by at least by 20 to 30 per cent this year. State Excise Minister T Padma Rao held a meeting with top Excise officials on Tuesday and finalised the new policy which would be forwarded to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for his final approval.
