Nizamabad: For the first time in four years, Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP), the lifeline of north Telangana, is set to receive floodwaters to its brim. Thanks to copious rains upstream of Godavari river in Maharashtra.

With the project receiving a whopping 4 lakh cusecs from Maharashtra and 2 lakh cusecs from local catchment area, the officials lifted all 42 crest gates of the dam releasing 2 lakh cusecs downstream.

The authorities sounded a flood alert in all five districts – Nizamabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam – where Godavari river flows.

It may be noted here that project went bone dry in 2015-16 season receiving a paltry 3 TMC Ft against its capacity of 90 TMC Ft after that not too impressive 2014-15 season where it had only received 14 TMC Ft.

However, the first spell of inflows to the project in the first week of August rekindled the hopes of farmers, thereafter the reservoir didn’t receive as much inflows as one would have desired. As a result, the water level in the project remained at the half way mark till recently.

Albeit, Godavari river has been receiving abundant inflows this season through Indravathi, Pranahita, Swarna etc, it was of no use as these tributaries join the river far downstream of the project.

Against this backdrop, the irrigation officials on Saturday lifted 42 gates of the project releasing 2 lakh cusecs downstream. It includes 17,000 cusecs to Flood Flow Canal (FFC). Both Upper and Lower Manair dams will get floodwaters through the FFC.

Speaking to The Hans India, the SRSP Executive Engineer B Rama Rao said: “Currently, the inflows are close to 6 lakh cusecs. The water level in the project is being maintained at 1089 ft (80 TMC Ft) against its full reservoir level of 1091 (90 TMC Ft) with the news of copious inflows from upstream areas.”

Meanwhile, the project is also expected to receive around 1 lakh cusecs of inflows from Singur and Nizam Sagar projects.

It may be noted here that SRSP provides irrigation facility to 5.73 lakh acres alone in Karimnagar district. In all, the project has an ayacut of 5 lakh acres for Kharif and 3 lakh acres for Rabi.

Earlier in the day, the Minister for Endowments A Indrakaram Reddy offered prayers at the project and lifted nine gates releasing 30,000 cusecs of water. Later in the day, the inflows picked up forcing the officials to open more gates.
