The Open House was houseful as students made a beeline to have a glimpse of a whole lot of arms – AK-47, SLR, light machine guns, rifle grenade, teargas grenade guns, pistols, revolvers etc. - on display. However, what attracted them most was the equipment used by the bomb disposal squad and the two-way and other wireless sets.

CLUES team gave a demonstration of how they gather fingerprints from the scene of offence. This apart what appealed them most was the affection of the Warangal Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu. As the students swarmed around him, the Commissioner explained and demonstrated handling of AK-47 and other weapons. Throwing a trivia question - Why AK-47 weapon had got that name, he announced Rs 1,000 cash prize for one who answers first.

While on duty nearly 800 police personnel get killed across the country every year. A sacrifice that often goes unidentified,” Sudheer Babu told The Hans India, stating that Open House event was aimed at demystifying what really was going on in the Police Department to the people, especially students.

A cop’s job is all about Khatron Se Khelna (playing with danger), the Commissioner said, expressing hope that the weeklong event would generate passion among the children to go for police jobs and serve the country. “It was a day out for me from the routine academics,” K Gayatri of Markaji High School said, who is apparently bowled over by the fatherly affection of the Commissioner. Like others, she was on cloud nine after getting a hands-on experience of arms and she even got an opportunity to talk on the wireless with other personnel. As part of Police Commemoration Week, the Commissionerate has lined up quite a few programmes like creating awareness about road accidents, superstitions and the ill effects of child marriages.
