Mahbubnagar: Swetha Mohanty, District Collector of the newly-carved Wanaparthy, who made a surprise visit to the Government Area Hospital here, expressed her displeasure over the state of affairs at the hospital and directed the hospital authorities to prepare an action plan to improve institutional deliveries in the district.

According to sources, the area hospital is performing less than 20 per cent institutional deliveries and majority of the pregnant women are being referred to other hospitals citing lack of gynecologists and anesthetists at the hospital.

“The hospital fares better in having all kinds of advanced medical facilities like beds, operation theatre, labs, blood bank, dialysis centre and advanced cancer diagnostic centre. However despite having all these facilities, the hospital has failed to perform 100 per cent institutional deliveries.

We have directed the hospital authorities to prepare an action plan to promote the institutional deliveries and ensure 100 per cent execution in the next one month,” informed the collector.

However, the hospital staff opined that despite acute shortage of staff, they were able to ensure more than 30 to 35 institutional deliveries out of 60-75 pregnant women who come there. About 15-20 cases are referred to other hospitals based on the complexity of the case.

We are having about eight doctors in the hospital of which four are MBBS doctors and the remaining four are other specialists. The main reason for not achieving 100 per cent institutional delivery is because of nonavailability of gynecologists and anesthetists.

This apart, we are having five vacancies of senior medical staff to look after the administration. We need three civil surgeons and the posts of Residential Medical Officer, Deputy Civil Surgeon and an administrative officer are vacant,” informed Abdul Rauf, Medical Superintendent of the hospital.

At present, the hospital has a capacity of 100 beds and more than 800 patients visit the hospital everyday. To deliver effective services, the government needs to fill all the vacant posts.
