Mahbubnagar: District Collector Ronald Rose has vowed to bring in a comprehensive action plan to eradicate the “jogini system” completely from the district.

While attending a ‘grama sabha’ organised in Dhanwada mandal on Friday to spread awareness about the evils of ‘jogini system’ prevailing in the district, the Collector said, “Prevalence of jogini system is very high in Mahbubnagar district.

This is not a good sign for a civilised society. To eradicate this system right from the root, we are planning to come out with an action plan in the next one month and ensure comprehensive rehabilitation measures such as recognising the ‘joginis’ as Scheduled Caste and distribution of 3 acres of land to them so that they can live on their own without depending on others,” said Ronald Rose.

‘Jogini’ or ‘devadasi’ system is a religious practice prevailing in parts of Mahbubnagar such as Narayanpeta, Dhanwada and other areas for centuries.

According to this system, parents marry a daughter to a deity or a temple. The marriage usually occurs before the girl reaches puberty and requires the girl to become a ‘jogini’ for upper-caste community members.

Usually, the girl children of existing ‘joginis’ are converted as ‘devadasis’ and this is prevailing in almost all the major towns in Mahbubnagar. Though of late there has been some awareness and many prefer to live a dignified life, but this menace is still continuing in some areas in the district.

While addressing the ‘grama sabha’, the Collector expressed concern that during ‘Jatharas’ there is a possibility that the young girls from the rural villages may be converted into ‘joginis’ and directed the officials and police department to take strict action on complaints relating to ‘joginis’.

As part of a action plan to rehabilitate the ‘jogini’ families, the Collector promised that all children of ‘joginis’ will be given free admission into ‘Gurukula Patashalas’ (government residential schools) and priority will be given in scholarships for such children.

“We will specifically identify ‘joginis’ in the district and provide all kinds of government assistance such as ‘Antyodaya Cards’, Asara pension, Beedi workers pensions and extend all government assistance for their welfare,” the Collector said.
