Karimnagar/Sircilla: Finally, the Sripada Yellampalli Irrigation Project water is set to drench the fields in its command area, however partially. Though the construction of the barrage was completed last year and it was brimming with water following copious rainfall in the region, the inordinate delay in land acquisition, and the construction of pipeline and pump house works held up the lift scheme from commissioning.

It’s been a dozen years since the works of the project across Godavari river near Yellampalli village under Ramagundam mandal got underway. Though the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy vowed to complete it within a five-year timeframe to address the irrigation and drinking water needs of upland regions of Telangana region, the works continued at a snail’s pace.

Designed to store 20.17 tmc ft and lift a total of 63 tmc ft, the project was aimed at irrigating 1.65 lakh acres in undivided Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Warangal and Medak districts. Besides this, the project is also slated to supply 7 tmc ft to NTPC Ramagundam’s power generation requirement and 10 tmc ft to Hyderabad’s drinking water needs.

The Rs 2,803 crore lift scheme, which includes works of six pump houses, 110.5 kilometers pipeline, 66 kms gravity canal, modernisation of 16 tanks and other components, was divided into three packages. While the Package-I includes irrigation of 49,500 acres, Package-II and III covers 54,000 acres and 58,800 acres respectively. In all, construction of 205 kms canal out of a total 288 kms is completed.

Against this backdrop, the government targeted to irrigate at least 50,000 acres by this Kharif by completing works of pump houses and canal. However, now the target has been truncated to 25,000 acres due to incompletion of canal works. Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao will release Yellampalli waters officially from Fazal Nagar tank in Vemulawada mandal on Tuesday.

The water will reach Narsingapur village under Chandurthi mandal through gravity canal. From there, water will be pumped to all the tanks. Earlier, the irrigation officials conducted a trial run releasing water from Yellampalli dam to Vemsoor, Medaram and Gangadhara pump houses.
