Mahabubnagar: Sallonipally village in Dhanwada Mandal of Mahabubnagar district is racing against time to construct 332 toilets in 48 hours and become one of the first ‘open defecation free’ villages in the district.

Launching the programme on Friday, Collector Ronald Rose and Srinivas Goud, MLA Mahabubnagar, called upon the villagers to extend their full cooperation and coordinate with the teams to reach the target in the scheduled time. The village, with 386 households, is currently having only 52 toilets. People in the remaining households are defecating in the open.
Last week, the Collector conducted an awareness camp in the village. Students, youth and elders of the village were convinced to go for mass construction of toilets so as to make the village a role model. The Collector, along with the officials, charted a comprehensive plan to launch the mass construction of toilets programme on November18th.

Special officers, MPDOs and Tahasildars from 21 mandals in the district were roped in and 21 teams were formed, each constituting 3 members. Each team has been given a target of constructing toilets for 16 households in 48 hours. “We have taken up this mammoth project, not just to make Sallonipally a model ‘open defecation free’ village, but to show to the people that if the villagers, officials and the district administration work together, they can achieve any kind of development in no time. It needs a lot of commitment, consistency and planning in addition to cooperation and coordination from the villagers,” said the Collector.

The Collector said that the main purpose of roping in officials from different mandals for this project was to make them aware and help them get experience so that they can carry out such novel mass programme in the villages of their region and help make the entire district ‘open defecation free’.
