Hyderabad: With summer just around the corner, the state has set its eyes on raising its revenue by increasing production of beer by several notches and also selling it to seven other states.
Telangana is one of the highest beer consuming as well as producing states in the country. The 17 breweries established in and around Greater Hyderabad district is a testimony to the fact. Telangana government which has been exporting beer to AP so far now wants to export it to Karnataka (particularly Bengaluru), Kerala, Maharashtra, Assam, West Bengal and Goa where the demand is high. The premium brands produced in Telangana the government feels can become the most sought after beer for guzzlers in these states every summer.
Top officials of the state Excise and Prohibition department told The Hans India that this financial year, government targeted Rs 14,700 crore revenue from liquor sales. So far, 70 per cent of the targets has been achieved and identified beer exports as one of the main revenue resources to the state.
From beer sales alone, the government targeted to earn Rs 2,400 crore through domestic sales and exports to other states. Nearly 30 lakh cases (each case containing 12 bottles) has been supplied to AP during summer.
This year, government wanted to double the revenue to nearly Rs 500 crore in three months. All the breweries have been asked to utilise the total installed production capacity of beer ensuring to meet the requirement of nearly 100 lakh cases in Telangana during summer and another 100 lakh case for export purpose in three months.
Government has identified exporting beer to other states as one of the main revenue resources and it would be given priority in the coming days, officials told The Hans India.
The managements of the breweries have also been assured of required water supply from nearby by water sources mainly from Singur reservoir and Krishna water from the city reservoirs in the hot season.
State Breweries Association Secretary M Kameshwar Rao said that the breweries already started beer production in huge quantity in advance as it consumes more time package and export.
