As many as 2,800 agitators were taken into preventive custody since Tuesday evening and released them late on Wednesday evening in view of the call given by the Telangana Joint Action Committee for organising a rally and public meeting in Hyderabad. 

Hyderabad: As many as 2,800 agitators were taken into preventive custody since Tuesday evening and released them late on Wednesday evening in view of the call given by the Telangana Joint Action Committee for organising a rally and public meeting in Hyderabad.

TJAC convenor, M Kodandaram was taken into custody from his residence and was detained at Kamatipura police station till evening. Police did not allow anyone to see him at the police station.

A senior police official said the agitators were taken into preventive custody since there was no permission for the rally and public meeting and prohibitory orders were in force. In Hyderabad, as many as 447 persons were taken into preventive custody, while over 200 were detained in Cyberabad and Rachakonda.

A senior officer said that no untoward incident took place except sporadic incidents of minor stone pelting and sloganeering at OU and Nizam College. Despite claims by the police, tension prevailed in the city as hundreds of policemen were deployed in the city and the roads around Indira Park were sealed until evening.
