Hyderabad: Prof S Ramachandram, Vice Chancellor, Osmania University, said the university was planning to start a Centenary International School of Journalism as a flagship initiative among others during its centenary year.

Participating in the ‘Interactive Meet with the Editors’ here on Tuesday at the Osmania University Centre for International Programmes ( OUCIP) , Prof Ramachandram unveiled the initiatives which include establishment of a Centre for Telangana Studies, Dr B R Ambedkar Research Centre and a Skill development Centre.

The Department of Communication and Journalism has proposed the university to set up a Centenary International School of Journalism to impart training to students from Afro-Asian and Mid-East countries since there is already a sizable presence of foreign students in the university. The proposed school is expected to fetch revenue for the university.

Prof Ramachandram said that the focus during the centenary year would be to usher in academic reforms, strengthen infrastructure, good governance, foster a better research culture, bolster university-industry linkages and modernise.

Admitting that there were limitations, he said he was prepared to face them as a challenge. He further pointed out that the university was making efforts to take all the stakeholders into confidence for smooth conduct of the celebrations.

While thanking the editors for their suggestions, he disclosed that two descendants of the Nizam family had agreed to be part of celebrations. Also, at a meeting held recently, all affiliated colleges were informed to celebrate the centenary by hosting different events, he said and added that that the centenary echo would reverberate across the State.

Assuring the editors that the university administration would consider their ‘enlightened suggestions’, he sought their cooperation during the centenary celebrations. On forthcoming events, Prof Ramachandram said a centenary run would be held on March 11 and that Governor ESL Narasimhan would flag it off early in the morning.

Several editors and senior journalists assured their support to the university and suggested that the university should make efforts to ‘create a qualitatively different intellectual eco system which should become a culture in the University,’ instill moral/ ethical values, compile an official history of the university, create an app on the centenary, focus on social sciences, rope in celebrities to create a buzz, establish an Inter Disciplinary Research Centre and design new courses in emerging areas. Prof H Venkateshwarlu, Special Officer, OU Centenary Celebrations, and members of the alumni association also spoke.
