Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad on Tuesday admitted a Public Interest Litigation petition questioning the illegal constructions being taken up around the historic Golkonda Fort, endangering its structure and its place in UNESCO list of world heritage sites.

The division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Shameem Akhter, hearing the PIL moved by social activist Lubna Saraswath, issued notices to the Central and Telangana State governments, Archaelogical Survey of India and HMDA and directed them to file counters within three weeks.

Counsel for the petitioner B. Rachna Reddy informed the bench that the earlier orders of the High Court banning any illegal constructions around the structure are being blatantly violated by the Golf Course Association. This association is demolishing the walls of the Golkonda Fort as part of ensuring pathway into the golf course.

She further informed that the UNESCO had placed Golkonda Fort in the preliminary list of world heritage sites and given the present illegal constructions, it may not make it to final list. She sought direction from the Court to limit the golf course to 50 acres.
