Hyderabad: Sitting in the middle row, resplendent in a maroon Turkish topi, Nawab Najaf Ali Khan, the grandson of the founder of Osmania University Mir Osman Ali Khan, was the lone member of the Nizam’s family present at the varsity’s centenary celebrations.

Seated in the VIP section, Najaf Ali Khan, along with his wife and son Anas Ali Khan, sat through the two-hour long programme. Speaking to The Hans India, Najaf Ali Khan said, “I feel proud to be invited and my heart swells with pride at the effort of my grandfather that has touched the lives of lakhs of people.”

He further added, “It is on very rare occasions that my wife accompanies me to functions, but I insisted that she come and I also wanted my son to witness the glory and grandeur of Arts College and Osmania University.” He said they were happy that Osmania University was celebrating the 100 years in a befitting manner, but he also rued the fact that he was not fortunate enough to study in the university that his grandfather established.

He said, “I was just three-years-old when my grandfather passed away in 1967. I grew up hearing so many lovely stories about his contribution to the society and the development of Hyderabad.” He adds, “Today, when I sit at the sprawling grounds, I feel proud to be a part of the family that has given so much to Hyderabad.”

Many students of Osmania University and faculty members took selfies with the Nawab. He said, “Even after the programme got over, I had to wait for 30 minutes as students and officials came to us for photos. This shows how much love people have for my grandfather.”
