Hyderabad: Bio-metric attendance system has busted fake attendance scam in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

After the implementation of bio-metric attendance system, it has saved Rs 6 crore during the month of April. The bio-metric attendance system exposed the manipulation of sanitary field assistants.

The civic body has been using 20 bio-metric machines in order to register the attendance of about 19,000 sanitation workers.

Out of the total 19,000 workers, about 2,700 workers will be on their weekly off and 16,300 will be on the field. After shifting from manual to bio-metric system, it has been noticed additional 3,500 workers were absent on the field.

When queried about the issue, highly placed sources told The Hans India that several field assistants were manipulating the manual attendance and claiming fake bills.

Sources said that only in the month of April, the GHMC has managed to save Rs 5.25 crore towards salaries of 3,500 fake workers (Rs 15,000 salary for each worker).

He said that since several years the civic body has been losing about Rs 63 crore per annum due to manipulation of attendance.

GHMC’s higher officials admitted that lower cadre officials work hand in glove with sanitation workers and have been registering fake attendance. The officials said that sanitary field assistants (SFA), in collusion with Assistant Medical Officers (AMOs) for Health, have been registering fake attendance and withdrawing salaries in the name of employees who did not turn up for daily work.

Meanwhile, the corporation has been taking thumb impressions of 2,626 sanitation groups, 2,674 regular workers, 18,382 contract workers, 46 sanitary supervisors, 305 sanitary jawans and 948 SFAs.

Out of them, about 40 per cent have been registering fake attendance in manual system. The bio-metric had identified only 20 per cent of irregularities.
