  • With this, way has been cleared for acquiring land required to complete numerous irrigation projects

The government on Wednesday notified the “Right To Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Telangana Amendment) Act.” On the instructions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, the Irrigation Department began a fresh exercise for the acquisition of land at all project sites where the works have come to a standstill after the High Court struck down GO 123 issued for land acquisition last year.

All irrigation project works, including the most controversial Mallannasagar reservoir, and other medium irrigation scheme works were hit after the GO 123 was scrapped. As there was no option, the State government adopted Central Land Acquisition Act 2013 with some amendments.

The officials told The Hans India that the government had so far acquired 12, 000 acres of land for Palamur-Ranga Reddy Lift irrigation scheme. The total requirement of land is 30,000 acres. The works at the much-hyped biggest irrigation project, Kaleswaram irrigation scheme, had faced hurdles in the way of land acquisition. It requires 70,000 acres of land out of which only 22,000 acres were acquired. The ongoing Kalwakurthi project requires another 1,500 acres of land.

Officials said it is estimated that 31, 000 acres for Devadula and 17, 000 acres for AMRP ( Alimineti Madhav Reddy Project) are required. The irrigation Department acquired 40 per cent of the land so far. The government has already sanctioned Rs 7,249 crore alone for the construction of Mallannasagar reservoir with 50 tmcft capacity being taken up in the Chief Minister’s home district, Siddipet.

Three more reserviors - Baswapur and Gundlapochamma in Yadadri - Bhongir district and Kondapochamma Sagar in Siddipet district will also be cosntructed. Officials said land acquisition for these reservoirs will be taken up on war-footing. The department will also speed up land acquisition for ongoing SRSP stage- 2, Sripadasagar, Neettempadu, Bheema and Koilsagar and the medium irrigation projects Kinnerasani, Palem, Modikuntavagu, Gollavagu, Ralivagu, Komarambheem project and Gaddenna- Suddavagu projects.

Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao instructed all officials on the ground and project engineers to speed up the land acquisition. Special Deputy Collectors would be appointed at all project sites to oversee land acquisition and disburse compensation to the displaced without any delay.
