Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Area (HMA) will be choked with vehicular traffic as per the State government’s study. The study projects that the total vehicular traffic including passenger and good vehicles would increase by three times in the coming years.
According to a study conducted by the State government in coordination with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), passenger vehicle traffic would go up to 5 lakh from the present 1.5 lakh, goods vehicle traffic will increase from 53,000 to 1.50 lakh and passenger interactions with 44 ULBs with the HMA will increase to 8.4 lakh from the present 3.7 lakh in the next 25 years.

Government conducted the Contextual Refinement and Revalidation of Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) for HMA and placed the report before Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in a recently held meeting.
The objective of the study was to reassess the transportation strategies of the immediate, short, medium and long terms for the HMA and to prepare immediate (2017), short (2021), medium (2031) and long term (2041) transport strategies for Hyderabad Metropolitan Region.
In the meeting, the officials were asked to look into the major proportions of interaction for goods as well as passengers vehicles from the urban settlements located within the radius of 50 km, 100 km, 150 km, 200 km to address the growing traffic problems in the HMA limits. The Outer Ring Road, upcoming Regional Ring Road, Satellite Town Ships and other new developments will also be taken into consideration.
According to the report, the traffic crossing the cordon line had increased between 2011 and 2016.The total vehicle flow has been increased to 2.1 lakh from 1.6 lakh in five years by registering 5 per cent CAGR (Compound Annual Growth).
The traffic load had also increased from 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh, passenger flows (7 lakh to 8.3 lakh) and the goods vehicle transportation had increased from 48,000 to 53,000 between 2011 and 2016.
According to the study, in the next 25 years (by 2041), the total vehicular traffic will increase three fold in HMA and urban areas connected with the metropolitan area.
To avoid traffic congestion, the study made several recommendations including the fresh estimation of the spatial interaction between HMA and other parts of Telangana state, traffic loads on the major road network of the state, recognising the need and extent of capacity augmentation of road network and the terminal and interchange facilities in HMA for every five years.
