Hyderabad: Irked at being denied holidays, students of Narayana Junior College in Nizampet area locked up the staff in a room, then locked up the main entrance to prevent help from outside and then vandalised the hostel rooms.

The rampage began around 2 am and went on for hours until police reached the place, forcibly opened the main entrance and then rescued the college staff who were locked up in a room.

The incident occurred after second year students had demanded 'homesick' leaves, but were denied permission on the ground that the college began only a couple of weeks ago and senior students cannot be given homesick leaves.

At around 2am on Wednesday, enraged students allegedly locked up the building, broke windows on three floors, besides ransacking the hostel and classrooms and damaging furniture. They also tried to set some material on fire, but were unsuccessful.

The students didn't spare anything and overturned beds and broke switchboards as well. They also threw the water tank from the roof and smashed tube lights, until the police were called in. The officials had to break the lock to enter the premises.

Speaking to the media, the second year students said that they were not given a single homesick leave since May, when the academic year started. They said that the administration refused to listen to their pleas. They also complained about the quality of food, the hygiene in toilets and disrespectful behaviour of the college staff towards the visiting parents and relatives.

Police had to negotiate with the students via a megaphone, as the teenagers continued to yell and shout from inside the building and even pelted stones at the police. KBHP Colony police station Inspector, Ch Kushalkar said that the students and college administration had made peace as holidays have been declared, and normalcy returned.

As of now, the college administration is yet to file a complaint. Therefore, there has been no case registered," he said. Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana is the head of the Narayana Group of Institutions.
