Hyderabad: With AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh deciding to launch 'spiritual padayatra' in his home State of Madhya Pradesh from September end this year, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh States are set to have new Congress in-charge to lead the party in 2019 elections.

Highlights:

  • The Congress party is exploring the possibility of appointing one of the AICC General Secretary to look after party affairs in two Telugu States
  • This follows the decision by present party in-charge Digvijay Singh to embark on ‘spiritual padayatra in his home State of Madhya Pradesh

Digvijay Singh has been Congress in-charge to Telangana and AP since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. However, the AICC leader's political acumen did not yield any benefit the Congress in the last election.

The TPCC sources said Digvijay is already busy in finalising his padayatra schedule in Madhya Pradesh where the Assembly elections are scheduled in 2018. The AICC leader wants to try his luck to assume the office of Chief Minister in MP. He was earlier the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for two terms.

Digvijay Singh also informed State party leaders to look after the party affairs on their own as he would confine himself to his native State party affairs in the coming days. Strong speculations are doing rounds that one among the AICC leaders Gulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni, A K Antony, C P Joshi, Mukul Wasnik and Shakeel Ahmed may be appointed as Congress in-charge to Telangana and AP.

The party High Command hinted that Azad or Ambika Soni may take over as in-charge for the party in the two States as the duo are familiar to politics in two Telugu States. Azad was the party in-charge in 2004 and 2009 elections when Congress came to power in the united Andhra Pradesh. Ambika looked after party affairs for a brief time between 1994 and 2004.

AICC Vice-President Rahul Gandhi is keen on appointing a senior most leader as party in-charge as the winning prospects of Congress in Telangana are bright in 2019 election, party leaders said TPCC sources said leadership equations may change in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh once new party in-charges are appointed
