Hyderabad: As part of the Union government’s National Measles elimination and Rubella control programme, the State government with start the Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign from August 17 to September 25.

According to reports, so far, Telangana has about 800 cases of Measles reported this year. Measles is a highly infectious and potentially fatal disease which mostly affects children. Officials said in rural areas people do not bring measles affected patients to hospital for treatment which becomes difficult for the officials to report deaths.

In case of Rubella, it is a mild viral infection affecting both children as well as adults. When Rubella infection occurs during pregnancy it can cause severe lifelong disabilities (Congenital Rubella Syndrome) to the child and a huge socio- economic burden to the family and society in general. As per the statistics, around 3,000 cases of Congenital Rubella Syndrome are reported across Telangana.

Health and Family Welfare commissioner Vakati Karuna told The Hans India that during the MR vaccine campaign we will be targeting children in the age group of nine months to 15 years. There are around 90 lakh children in this age group in the State. This massive campaign would be carried out in four weeks in all schools, government hospitals and villages, she said.
