Hyderabad: Tourists visiting Charminar and other historical places including Laad Bazar and Chowmahalla Palace are facing problems in parking their vehicles even as the traffic police claiming to ease the traffic management in the area. Footfall increases during holidays and parking space shrinks on the already narrow spaces available near Charminar. Most of the tourists visiting by their own vehicles have to face this problem and few turn back due to difficulty in parking.
Currently there is a space for four wheeler parking at Nizamia Tibbi College however that is not sufficient for the huge number of tourists visiting Charminar during holidays. “It becomes very tough for us to wait for one or two hours for parking when we come to see this world famous structure,” said Ratna Kumari a tourist from Aurangabad.
Parking spaces are available beside Mecca Masjid, Khilwat ground near Chowmahalla Palace and Charminar Bus stop, but most of the tourists were not aware with these spots and strand near Charminar. This situation not only creates ruckus but also stalls the traffic movement starting from Gulzar House.
The traffic police officials are tight-lipped when asked about the proposal of free parking facility near Charminar. “It is a tough task to find a proper parking place near Charminar. We could not find a proper signage for parking when started from the Nayapul Bridge towards Charminar, which is a standard way to guide the first time visitors,” said Gaurav Gautam a tourist from Karnataka. The traffic police are good at managing traffic flow but parking remained an issue he added.
Some tourists near Chowmahalla Palace complained of high parking charges collected by the people for one to two hours near Khilwat ground. Tourists who hire cabs or guides don’t face this issue but the ones who visit by their own find it tough to deal with this issue. Charges for parking at Unani Hospital are somewhere around Rs 30 to Rs 50 whereas some people were collecting more than Rs 60 near Khilwat ground.
Interestingly, government had announced to speed up the pedestrian project near Charminar and developing multi-level parking in the area however works pertaining to the project could not take off so far.
