Hyderabad: Governor ESL Narasimhan on Friday said the Telangana government in general and Deputy Chief Minister and in-charge of Education Kadiyam Srihari in particular were taking a lot of interest in strengthening higher education in the new State and much had been done for higher education in the past three years.

Speaking at the first conference of Vice Chancellors of Telangana State held at B R Ambedkar Open University, the Governor said the Telangana government had permitted universities to fill vacancies of faculty positions and the Vice Chancellors should fix a time-frame for filling the vacant faculty posts in all universities.

He also said the universities should prepare academic calendars, including schedule of admissions, examinations, declaration of results and so on.

The Governor said doctoral research done in universities should have societal relevance, adding that the universities should ensure that only quality research was carried out with definite time frame to complete the Ph D. New courses should be evaluated and its relevance to job market should be assessed, he said, adding that it was the quality of higher education that mattered and not the quantity. He said he was happy with the NAAC rankings for the universities; however, campus recruitment should be given top priority and commercialisation of higher education was not acceptable.

The Governor said all universities should set up academic and executive councils with members of higher learning and they should meet regularly and discuss on how to improve the curriculum and quality of teaching.

He also said technology should be utilised to monitor attendance of faculty and students through biometric devices and CCTV cameras should be installed in all constituent colleges and affiliated colleges. The Governor said his government had zero tolerance for corruption and audit of funds released to all universities should be done on a periodic basis.

He also said performance of the universities would be judged on the basis of employability of students coming out of the universities. He said Telangana State should reach number one position in higher education in the country also and the Vice Chancellors were responsible to achieve the same.

The Governor appreciated the system of Faculty Development Programme implemented by the JNTU. He said all other universities should adopt the same. On the occasion, the Governor launched the redesigned website of Dr BR Ambedkar Open University. Kadiyam Srihari assured the Governor that an action plan would be prepared to fill all vacant faculty positions in the universities within six months. He urged the Vice Chancellors to see that universities function as centres of excellence.

Special Chief Secretary of Higher Education Ranjeev Acharya, Chairman of Telangana State Council of Higher Education Papi Reddy, Principal Secretary to Governor Harpreet Singh, and Vice Chancellors of 11 universities attended the conference.
