Central Zone with a haul of 17 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals and an aggregate of 149 points emerged as the overall champions in the five-day CBSE national Judo championship at DAV School in Safilguda here on Sunday.

North Zone finished second with 118 points Later, Lok Sabha member Malla Reddy gave away prizes in the presence of noted educationist Dr PG Sastry, who is also chief adviser to Environmental Protection and Training Research Institute for Telangana State.

In all 694 participants drawn from across eight zones vied for honours.

Incidentally, the overall boys and girl’s champions were Central Zone and North Zone II respectively.

Malla Reddy appreciated the efforts of the school’s Principal Parthipan and his faculty members for extolling the virtues of sports to go with academics.

The Organising Secretary Subhash Chandra was singled out for special praise for the diligence in putting together the event.

Reddy urged all those who missed out on making it to the podium not to get disheartened as participation and sportsmanship would motivate them to grow further.
Dr Sastry applauded the participants and motivated them to move towards their goal.

The principal thanked CBSE for allocating the tournament to the school, which, incidentally, was the only DAV from among 920 CBSE schools to make the cut. In a plea to the authorities, he contended that the meritorious talent ‘deserved reservations in educational institutions and in State and Central government jobs’.

Toppers-Best Judoka Boys: U/19 70 kg Suranshu Taqur (North Zone-I); Best Judoka girls U/19 60 kg Ritu (North Zone-II); Overall Championship Winner: Central Zone (gold medal 17, silver 15, bronze 19) with 149 points; Runner-up: North Zone II (gold medals 13, silver 13, bronze 14), with 118 points; Overall Championship Boys: Winner: Central Zone & runner-up: North Zone II.; Girls: Winner North Zone II & runner-up: Central Zone.
