Khammam: The efforts of the district administration and the initiation taken by the District Collector, D S Lokesh Kumar, for making the district Open Defecation Free (ODF) are yielding good results with many mandals almost ready to declare themselves as ODF mandals.

The officials in association with the people’s representatives are striving hard by motivating the villagers and by speeding up the construction of individual sanitary latrines (ISLs) in Khammam Rural, Mudigonda and Kusumanchi mandals, which may be declared as ODF mandals very soon by completing 100 per cent of ISLs in all the village panchayats present in the respective mandals. In Khammam Rural mandal, the officials have declared as many as 16 village panchayats as ODF. In Mudikonga and Kusumanchi mandals, about 10 village panchayats were declared as ODF so far.

With the orders issued by Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageshwar Rao to speed up the construction works of ISLs in the district, the district administration is putting up all its strength to announce the district as ODF by December this year.

The secretaries of Employment Guarantee Scheme and Panchayat department, representatives of IKP and Self-Help Groups along with peoples’ representatives are focusing on village panchayats that were lagging in ISLs construction. By organising special grama sabhas, they were creating awareness among the villagers for speeding up the construction in their respective villages.

Project Director of District and Rural Development Agency Muralidhar Rao said that they were taking several steps to speed up the construction works of ISLs. Orders were issued to mandal-level officials to spend maximum time in visiting their concerned mandals and creating awareness among people, especially women, present in villages for completing the works within the time limit, he informed.

The MPP of Khammam Rural said people’s representatives and district officials are creating awareness among the villagers for completing the construction of ISLs in Khammam Rural mandal as early as possible to declare it as ODF. The government is sanctioning Rs 12,000 for construction of each ISL to protect the self-respect of a woman, she added.

Mudigonda Mandal Parishad Development Officer P Narmada said that with the cooperation of sub-ordinates along with people’s representatives about 70 per cent of ISL construction works were completed in the mandal and the remaining works will be completed very soon.

Attending at a meeting organised on the occasion of declaration of Munigepalli village panchayat of Kusumanchi mandal as ODF, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Marapaka Nagesh appreciated the collective efforts of officials and people’s representatives and MPDO Vidhya Chandana, who strived for completing 100 per cent of construction works of ISLs.
