Vaccine kills infant, two others critical

Munugodu (Nalgonda): In a gruesome incident, one infant died and the condition of two others was said to be critical due to reaction of a vaccine administered to them by health officials.
This incident took place at a primary health centre (PHC) in Munugodu mandal headquarters on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as 45-day-old baby of Danam Anusha and Swamy couple of Laxmidevi Gudem in Munugodu mandal.
According to sources, mother Anusha brought her infant to get the vaccine administered at PHC of Munugodu. The staff of PHC administered the injection, as doctor was not available at the hospital, alleged by victim’s parents. After giving injection, within minutes, the kid reportedly became unconscious and died.
Other two infants were shifted to the district Government Hospital in Nalgonda as the condition of the duo became serious. The kin of the deceased infant staged dharna before the hospital and demanded stringent action against the staff and the PHC doctor.
Speaking to media, mother Anusha wept unconsolably and questioned the irresponsibility of the PHC staff. Other patients showed solidarity with mother Anusha and unanimously expressed their support to the bereaved family members. With police intervention and proper assurance by the officials, the protestors withdrew the dharna.
