Diabetic retinopathy awareness camp held in Kuruma Basti

Amberpet: The slum-dwellers are not aware of diabetes complications and the preventive measures to avoid those complications. Hence, an awareness camp on eye complication of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy (DR) was organized by Dr R Radhika Rohini, principal investigator, under the auspices of Indian Institute Of Public Health (IIPH, Hyderabad) and The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust at Shivavani Vivekananda School in Kuruma Basti at Amberpet on Friday. Dr Radhika said that one in five diabetics are being diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes leading to
blindness.
A video film was shown on diabetic retinopathy to increase awareness and yearly retina check up was promoted. Apart from this, awareness was raised on signs and symptoms to identify complications of diabetes, need for regular check up, HbA1C test once for three months, proper diet and exercise along with yearly eye check with a retina specialist. R Narsing Rao, Director, Sahara, said that free checkup and transport to eye clinics was arranged and asked the patients to avail the benefit. The programme was attended by D Balavath Goud, correspondent, Rishida, principal and ASHA worker Navneetha, and Sahara employee Rama K participated in organising the awareness programme.
