Juvenile delinquency cases decline in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Inspector General (law and order) and Women's Safety Swati Lakra on Friday said that there is a gradual reduction in juvenile delinquency. The percentage of juveniles involved in misbehaving cases in the twin cities of Hyderabad has dropped from 26 per cent (in 2014-15) to 12 per cent (in 2018-19).
Till now total 771 FIRs had been registered including Nirbhaya Act cases, 73 IT Act, 104 POCSO Act cases under relevant sections of law. Around 1,351 petty cases were registered against the offenders. A total of 3,379 persons were counselled and monitored. Whereas 3,077 people were warned and let off with instructions not to repeat such offences in future.
More than 7,354 awareness programmes were conducted by SHE teams at schools, colleges, hostels and other establishments. Around 40.12 lakh people were reached and benefitted from these programmes.
She said across the State after analysing the data in 2018, SHE teams received 2,709 direct complaints, 2,825 WhatsApp complaints, 2,270 Dial 100 complaints, 26 Facebook complaints, 351 e-mail complaints and 100 HawkEye complaints. She said 38 per cent of the accused were in 19-24 years of age, 36 per cent were in 25-35 years and they caught 12 per cent of accused below 18 years of age. The modes of harassment were 38 per cent teasing and misbehaving, 31 per cent harassment over phone, 13 per cent passing lewd comments, stalking was 10 per cent, harassing on social media six per cent and touching inappropriately 1.5 per cent.
Different kinds of cases were registered and investigated into from IPC, IT Act, Nirbhaya Act to petty cases. The PD Act proceedings were also initiated against repeat offenders. Minors were counselled in the presence of their parents due to which there is a gradual reduction in minor crimes.
Inspector General of Police Swati Lakra said SHE teams have successfully curbed sexual harassment at public places to a large extent and are on the path of achieving the goal of safe and secure State.
