Vikarabad: The sudden rise in vegetable prices is taking a toll on the common man who is finding it difficult to buy as the cost of any vegetable is not less than Rs 50 per kg.The vegetable prices have gone up in the last 15 days as the supply from the farmers is not meeting the demand in the market. Businessmen and hotel owners are facing a tough time with the sudden rise of prices as one has to shell out more for basic ingredients.

While ginger costs Rs 70 per kg, chilly is costing Rs 80 per kg and other vegetables are also more expensive, one resident lamented. The dearth of rains has led to the poor supply of water to cultivated lands, which results in less cultivation of vegetables. Poor produce has led to restricted supply and increased demand, hence making them costlier.

Consumers said that vegetable prices are very high in villages compared to urban areas. Prices in Vikarabad, Tandur, Parigi and other small towns have increased three times. As rural areas are not cultivating vegetables, businessmen and middlemen are supplying vegetables from Hyderabad markets.
