Warangal: There is an imperative need to strike a balance between conservation of environment and development, Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) chairman Prof T Papi Reddy said, addressing the two-day national seminar on ‘Ecology, Environment and Sustainable Development’ at Senate Hall in Kakatiya University (KU) on Friday.

Prof Papi Reddy who was the chief guest of the programme said, “The world is facing a twin crisis – economic and environmental. The need of the hour is sustainable growth to reduce poverty.”. The programme was presided over by the V-C R Sayanna.

Renowned economist and University of Hyderabad Prof D Narasimha Reddy said that theme of the seminar is rapidly expanding subject discussed at the global level. Dwelling at length on the seminar theme, he tried to touch the broad contours in regard with the agriculture.

He said that sustainable development is a challenge in the age of globalisation. He expressed concern over the large scale disruption of ecosystem. He discussed about global environmental initiatives, Paris Agreement 2015 on climate change, national and regional initiatives of sustainable agriculture, Cuba's Real Green Revolution and Sikkim’s initiative towards organic farming.

Guest of honour former Satavahana University V-C Prof Md Iqbal Ali said that focus should be on protecting ecological balance so that to ensure a clean environment for the future generations.

Dean, faculty of social sciences, KU, Prof T Ramesh said: “Onus is on every one to protect the environment. We need to avoid overexploitation of resources in the name of development.”

Head of Department of Economics, KU, and Seminar Director Dr K Mohan Reddy detailed about the aim of the seminar. Prof B Suresh Lal, Dr Swaroopa Rani, Dr Ramesh Reddy, retired Prof Jyothi Rani and Thirunahai Seshu were among others present.

On the occasion, the dignitaries released a souvenir of the seminar, and a book titled Dynamics of Tribal Economy in India authored by D Gugulothu.
