Hyderabad: The State government on Monday lodged a complaint with the Krishna River Management Board against the Andhra Pradesh government for taking up construction of Vaikuntapuram barrage on river Krishna in Guntur district. State Engineer-in-chief C Muralidhar shot off a letter to the KRMB requesting the board to stop the construction immediately as the project has been taken up in violation of AP Reorganisation Act 2014.

The TS government informed the board that AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid foundation stone to the barrage with a storage capacity of 10 TMC on Krishna about 23 km upstream of existing Prakasham barrage at Vaikuntapuram village in Amaravati mandal of Guntur district. The official said that the AP Reorganisation Act stipulates that planning or execution of new project has to be appraised and recommended by the board and by the Central Water Commission and thereafter if required sanction by the Apex council.

“It is not proper or within the competence of AP to proceed with the construction of any new project without complying with the guidelines stipulated in the Reorganisation Act,” Muralidhar said. AP is also bound to submit Detailed Project Report of the said project to KRMB, CWC and apex council for their scrutiny and approval, he said. The board has been requested to direct the AP government not to proceed with the construction of any new project on river Krishna.
